The Burning of Atlanta

How Atlanta Uses Meaningful Imagery

Atlanta violates one rule of good flag design: it uses text and a seal. But it uses meaningful symbolism in a way that makes it a "good" flag. On September 1, 1864, Union soldiers had the Confederates on the run. While retreating, Confederate soldiers torched 80 munitions train cars to prevent them from falling into Union hands. The fall of Atlanta and the ensuing destruction became known as the Burning of Atlanta. But the City of Atlanta rose again . . . like the mythical phoenix. And that is portrayed on the Atlanta flag. It works. It would work even better without all the text, but it's meaningful and resonates with its citizens.
