Marcus Hawkins's Design
This is a rather simple design of blue, white, red, and black. The proposed flag (ratio 2:3) features a blue field with three diagonal white stripes, a red shield with black border, and a white 5-pointed star contained within the red shield. The 3 white stripes begin at the lower-center of the field and extend diagonally upward towards the upper-right canton, near the fly end of the flag. Each stripe represents an important event or date in the history of the City of Oklahoma City: 1) The "Land Run" of April 22, 1889 which settled the city, 2) November 16, 1907- Oklahoma City becomes a part of (or a city within) the new State of Oklahoma, and, 3) June 11, 1910- Oklahoma City becomes the state capital of Oklahoma, supplanting the city of Guthrie. The 3 stripes extend in an upward direction from the lower part of the flag toward the upper-right canton to signify Oklahoma City's progression, advancement, and development; and that the city is "on its way to higher things."
I very much like the Seal of the City of Oklahoma City, so my intention was to re-purpose a portion of the Seal by using the red shield with the black border. The 5-pointed white star within the red shield is modeled on the 5-pointed star which appears on the Seal of the State of Oklahoma; the intention here is that because Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma, the OKC flag should have an element which pays homage to the state as a whole.
Please note that I use colored card stock to create flags, and the available colors are somewhat limited. I have tried to match the Seal's colors as closely as possible. My intention is that the colors used should be identical to those shades of blue, black, red, and white which appear on the City Seal. I'm told that the blue shade is called "Process Blue" and the red is "PMS 032 Red" but I don't know for sure. Anyway, the intended shades are those of the City Seal.
Please excuse the slightly lopsided shield, the card stock makes it tough to get the thin black border or the shield perfectly straight. My intention for this flag is to have a shield which is the same shape as the one that appears on the City Seal, and has the same black border. Basically just take the white cross and the little pictures off of there, and that's what I intend for the red shield and black border.
Thank you very much,
Marcus Hawkins
